Provenance: the artist

The work is part of Roden Crater Project, a large-scale immersive artwork located in the Painted Desert region, Arizona, US. It is created within a volcanic cinder cone, a controlled environment for the experiencing and contemplation of light, especially during truly dark night skies.



James Turrell lives and works in Los Angeles. His practice is focused on perceptual art, particularly investigating the materiality of light, building on the sensorial experience of space, color, and individual perception. He is at the forefront of the Light and Space movement.


Turrell's exploration has expanded through various series, including Skyspaces (1974-), Ganzfelds (1976-), and most notably Roden Crater Project (1977-).

He has had twenty-two permanent installations at institutions such as the Henry Art Gallery, Seattle; Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, de Young Museum; and P.S. 1, Long Island City, New York.
