For the first time the Galleria Stein presents the work of Stefano Arienti, one of the most established and best known artists of his generation.

From the beginning his research has concerned itself with the processes of analysis and manipulation of images and materials taken from the real everyday world: through a wholly personal and ever new process, the author transfigures them, offering them the possibility of gaining unprecedented and surprising meanings.

Arienti’s work is therefore driven by pre-existing objects and figures - including the tradition of ancient art and the forms of popular culture - but creates alterations and translations of these that modify their meaning, in a striking creative process. The artist tackles key themes such as the relationship with natural reality, the role of the imagination and the concept of originality; in more recent years he has tested his skills on the realisation and installation of monumental works, yet these are always the outcome of a cognitive process from below, inspired by a precise cultural context. Reworking “poor”, commonly used materials - frequently including paper, books and images from postcards, posters or photocopies, as well as polystyrene, plastic, plasticine and cloth - Arienti creates works that surprise spectators, inviting them to reflect on the theme of “wonder” and urging their participation.

Arienti’s work inherits the sense of fun of many Italian conceptual artists, a playful attitude that is revealed in the obsessive pleasure in doing things manually, handling them, starting with a close personal relationship with the everyday; a relationship so intimate that you want to redo it, trace it, copy it.

In the historic gallery in Corso Monforte, Stefano Arienti presents previously unpublished works conceived specially for this occasion.

These are photographs taken by the artist himself, images that anyone can take with mobile phones and cameras, printed on chenille or on large format poster-type paper that may lead to a further manipulation, such as crumpling, gilding or silvering.

Once again Arienti proposes a cognitive process that starts with common objects, to arrive at transforming them and converting them, renewing the reflections on their painterly value. The printing on chenille, for example, gives the figures an unusual depth, and through the richness of the materials increases the texture of the colour. Likewise, the crumpling of the paper creates unexpected reliefs on the surface, enlivening it and rendering it more vibrant and alive. These are techniques that add tactile values and a texture to the image, which is grasped through new perceptive paradigms acquiring expressive capacity.

La Galleria Stein presenta per la prima volta il lavoro di Stefano Arienti, uno degli artisti più affermati e conosciuti della sua generazione. 

Fin dall’inizio la sua ricerca rivolge l’attenzione ai processi di analisi e manipolazione di immagini e materiali tratti dal mondo reale e quotidiano: attraverso un processo del tutto personale e sempre nuovo, l’autore li trasfigura, offrendo loro una possibilità di significazione inedita e sorprendente. Il lavoro di Arienti prende dunque le mosse da oggetti e figure preesistenti – includendo la tradizione dell’arte antica e le forme della cultura popolare – ma ne realizza alterazioni e traduzioni che ne modificano il senso, in un processo creativo dirompente. L’artista affronta temi chiave come il rapporto con la realtà naturale, il ruolo dell'immaginazione e il concetto di originalità; in anni più recenti si è cimentato nella realizzazione e installazione di opere monumentali, che sono però sempre esito di un processo conoscitivo dal basso, ispirato da un preciso contesto culturale. Rielaborando materiali "poveri" e d'uso comune – tra i quali figurano di frequente la carta, i libri e le immagini tratte da cartoline, poster o fotocopie, come pure il polistirolo, la plastica, la plastilina, le stoffe – Arienti realizza opere che stupiscono lo spettatore, lo invitano a riflettere sul tema della "meraviglia" e ne sollecitano la partecipazione. L’opera di Arienti eredita il senso del gioco proprio di molti artisti concettuali italiani, un atteggiamento giocoso, che si rivela nell’ossessivo piacere del fare manuale, della possibilità di manipolare le cose, a partire da una stretta e personale relazione con il quotidiano; una relazione così intima da volerla rifare, ricalcare, ricopiare.

Nella storica galleria di Corso Monforte, Stefano Arienti presenta opere inedite, pensate appositamente per questa occasione. Si tratta di fotografie scattate dallo stesso artista, immagini che chiunque può scattare con cellulari e macchine varie stampate su ciniglia o su carta di grande formato tipo poster che possono portare un’ulteriore manipolazione come stropicciatura, doratura o argentatura. Ancora una volta Arienti propone un processo conoscitivo che parte dagli oggetti comuni, per arrivare a trasformarli e riconvertirli, rinnovando la riflessione sul loro valore pittorico. La stampa su ciniglia, ad esempio, dona alle figure un’insolita profondità e attraverso la ricchezza del materiale aumenta la matericità del colore. Allo stesso modo la stropicciatura della carta, crea inaspettati rilievi sulla superficie, movimentandola e restituendola più vibrante e viva. Sono tecniche che aggiungono valori tattili e una texture all’immagine, che viene colta attraverso nuovi paradigmi percettivi acquistando capacità espressiva.
